Packing Tips

Is it bad that my vacation isn't for another 2 weeks and I have already started packing?! I have always been a highly organized person and hardly ever procrastinate. I was that student who started her projects the minute that they were assigned so I had time to proofread and perfect. The same goes with my wardrobe. When I have a special event or occasion, I diligently map out my outfits weeks before. I would probably go into cardiac arrest if I ever decided the day of. I am in awe of my friends who have the ability to pull things off last minute and under the gun. They thrive under pressure, while I crumble. Hence, I am currently drowning in a sea of clothes, deciding which ones will make the final cut.

Having two girls has been the biggest blessing in my life, however, it has taken this whole packing ordeal to a new level. An overwhelming level to say the least!! I know that my obsession with fashion is above and beyond, and the average person thinks I am absolutely crazy for obsessing over something so menial, but I can't resist. I love piecing things together and I take pride in the finished results.

The key to successful packing is to make lists. Firstly, I count how many night time outfits I will need for my vacation and plan my shoes accordingly. Over time, I have learned the importance of modifying. It took me a while to catch on, but after spending so much money for overweight luggage, my husband threatened my life! My first modification was choosing outfits that would go with the same pair of shoes or two. That way at least I am saving some room in the shoe department. The exact protocol goes for accessories. I opt for the same fashion jewelry that will easily work with all of my outfits so I am not transporting my entire jewelry box with me. I may or may not have done that in the past!

I used to bring enough outfits for 2 weeks worth but I grew out of that phase when the girls came along. Now I take the time to try on every outfit beforehand and narrow down my top picks. Then I usually bring two extra in case of an emergency, such as feeling too bloated in a pair of pants(lol). We can never be too prepared, right?!

Location sets the tone. Last year when we traveled to Aruba I brought a lot of fancier dresses and Caribbean inspired looks to emulate the theme. We were frequenting nicer restaurants and this suited our family well. This year we are traveling to Wildwood Crest. A much more laid back setting calls for more casual wear. While this sounds easier, I find this style to be more tedious and more difficult to pack for. Now I am forced to choose between tops and bottoms which can be harder to pair. Thank God for Target!

Since we will not be staying at a house where doing laundry is easily accessible, I firmly believe in bringing as many swimsuits and lounge wear as possible. While I love sand, it is super messy. Having an array of suits to choose from is key, so you are not spending your days waiting for your rinsed suits to be dry again. Splurge on your beachwear. Realistically, they will be what you wear the majority of your time. Plus, these items will stand the test of time and rarely go out of style.

Vacation time also inspires me to purchase the new underwear and sleepwear that the entire family so desperately needs, yet I continue to put off. I find it easy and convenient to buy new packs for everyone and throw them in the suitcase. Admittedly, if I am shopping for underwear and I see a cute top, I instantly put the underwear to the side. I know that you all have done this too. When I was younger, it was all about the Victoria Secret inspired ones but those days are long gone. Mom life in full effect. Thank God for vacation or I am not sure my family would ever have new underwear!

Use compression bags to pack your clothes. Not only do they save space in your bag, but they also double as a protector against unwanted spills or mishaps. If you don't have compression bags, roll over folding. It will definitely save you space and leaves things less wrinkly. Don't forget to pack a garbage bag or two. They are very useful in separating dirty and wet clothes from clean clothes and keeping cosmetics from spilling all over your stuff.

I think its time to add the hubby's items to my packing list. He religiously waits until the night before and without fail forgets a crucial item. How you can leave the house without a belt or underwear remains baffling to me. I will start googling the nearest mall now because I know we will likely need to make a pit stop. Now back to my list and packing! I can't wait to share our outfits and all vacation details in the weeks to come!
